Calm

Overview

An evidence based formulation of potent botanicals to promote a state of calm and provide relief from symptoms of stress and mild anxiety.

Whereas pharmacological anti-anxiety and anti-depressant agents target only a single neurotransmitter or physiological pathway, myCalm's combination of botanic ingredients act on the key neurotransmitters responsible for mood - serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline and GABA. Additional beneficial effects include antioxidant and neurotrophic support.

myCalm's ingredients have been shown to exert an anti-fatigue effect that increases mental work capacity against a background of stress and fatigue, particularly in tolerance to mental exhaustion and enhanced attention.

Indications

myCalm may be considered for the treatment of:

  • mild to moderate depression
  • mild to moderate anxiety
  • insomnia
  • cognitive support

The ingredients in myCalm may also be considered for their adaptogenic benefits, i.e. substances that enhance the capacity for coping with various stressors. Studies on animals and isolated neuronal cells have revealed that adaptogens exhibit neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, anti-depressive, anxiolytic and nootropic effects a wells as central nervous system (CNS) stimulating activity.

Mode of Action

myCalm's combination of botanicals work synergistically to enhance neurotransmitter retention and promote neuron health.

St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) - serotonergic, dopaminergic and noradrenergic
St. John's Wort containing hypericin and hyperforin has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for the treatment of anxiety, and mild to moderate depression. In the past years, its anti-depressant and neuroprotective properties have been extensively studied. St. John's Wort is most noted for its inhibition of reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, noradrenaline and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) [17704987]. A number of meta-analyses demonstrated comparable efficacy and safety when comparing St Johns Wort with pharmacological selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac) and sertraline (Zoloft) [28064110] [27589952] [11552767]. In postmenopausal women St Johns Wort reduced depression and hot flashes [31331546]. In a meta-analysis of animal models St. Johns Wort demonstrated cognitive enhancement effects [27762349]. In animal models of chronic stress St John's Wort ameliorated the decrease in brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) [33299301]. In human cell lines BDNF expression increased on exposure to St John's Wort [30979692].

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) - GABAergic and serotonergic.
Ashwagandha is a traditional herb containing withanolides and withasomniferolides and has been used to subjectively reduce stress and promote wellbeing. Clinical trials have demonstrated that daily use of ashwagandha reduces cortisol and in males increases testosterone [31517876]. It has been shown to decrease severity of obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms [27515872]. It improves sleep quality in subjects suffering from non-restorative sleep [32540634], helps manage insomnia [32818573] and also helps with improving sleep quality and mental alertness in older subjects [32226684]. In patients with schizophrenia a clinical trial demonstrated reduced depression and anxiety with daily use of ashwagandha [31046033]. Animal models indicate that ashwagandha mediates its beneficial effects by increasing GABA receptor activity [30998355], as well as serotonin receptor and transporter activity [33957677]. In animal models the effects of sleep deprivation as measured by decreases in serotonin and dopamine were ameliorated with ashwagandha [33214752].

Gotu Kola (centella asiatica) - serotonergic and neurotrophic.
Gotu kola is a traditional medical herb containing isoprenoids and phenylpropanoid derivatives with a long application history in anti-inflammation and cognitive support. The benefits of gotu kola on cognition has been demonstrated in a number of studies including improvment of cognitive deficits following stroke [27340413], nootropic and anti-Alzheimers properties [30414087] and other beneficial neurological effects [31736679]. In animals models provide insight into the mechanims of gotu kola's cognitive effects via serotonin increase activity [33022343] which provides pain relief from migraine [25908624] and confers antidepressant effects [32705202]. Animals studies have also demonstrated gotu kola increases hippocampal BDNF [31998466], increases BDNF-mediated cognitive performance [32013132] and alleviates chronic stress BDNF depletion [30956976].

Pomegranate (punica granatum) - serotonergic and neuroprotective.
The pomegranate fruit is a rich source of phytochemicals with high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, possessing numerous health benefits. More recently it has also been found to support serotonin activity. Urolithin A, a metabolite of pomegranate, enhances serotonergic production in neurons [33088927]. In animal models of menopause, pomegranate produces antidepressant-like effects via the serotonergic system [33220387] [29257042]. Clinical trials have reported daily consumption of pomegranate juice in older adults reduces cognitive decline [31711104] and improves memory [23970941]. Ellagic acid, a component of pomegranate confers neuroprotection [28388366]. Meta-analyses have found that pomegranate significantly reduces the pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-6 [33188983], C-reactive protein (as hs-CRP) and Tumor necrosis alpha (TNFa) [32147056].

Ingredients

All ingredients are certified organic. There are no inactive ingredients present. There are no additives, flavours, preservatives or fillers. No extracts are used.

Use of the entire plant component
According to the current state of scientific knowledge several groups of active compounds are contributing to the efficacious properties of each of the botanical ingredients and in some cases they have not been definitively characterised. Therefore MyGene's position is to retain the entire plant component wherever possible rather than rely on plant extracts.

Organically derived materials
Organically grown plants have not been exposed to human-made pesticides, fertilizers or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and thus avoid such contaminants, which in some cases have been found to contribute to cancer risk [34352232], birth defects [34207279] and hormone dysfunction [34355365]. Research has also shown that organically grown plants contain significantly higher quantities of beneficial nutrients such as antioxidants [20359265]. MyGene sources organic ingredients from certified producers whenever possible.

MyGene is committed to supporting environmentally sustainable and ethical practices.

Warnings

myCalm contains potent quantities of botanical ingredients. Please consult with your doctor if pregnant, nursing or taking any medications prior to use.

Specific interactions with St John's Wort may include serotonin syndrome when co-administered with selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (e.g. setraline and paroxetine) (15260917). Hyperforin, one of the chief components of St John's Wort, plays an important role in the induction of cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP) and P-glycoprotein transporter. It has demonstrated clinically important interactions with several classes of conventional drugs such as immunosuppressants, anticancer agents, cardiovascular drugs, oral contraceptives, and lipid lowering agents (28885074).

Keep out of reach of children.

Do not exceed recommended dose.
