What happens to my DNA sample in the lab?

In the lab, your DNA sample will be processed to extract the DNA molecules. This typically involves breaking open the cells in your sample to release the DNA, and then purifying the DNA to remove any contaminants. Once the DNA is purified, it is amplified using a technique called qualitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). This allows the lab to produce many copies of the DNA, making it easier to analyze.

After the DNA has been amplified, it is typically analyzed using a variety of techniques, depending on the specific genetic test being performed. These techniques may include sequencing the DNA to look for specific genetic variants or mutations that may be associated with certain health conditions or traits.

How accurate are Mygene tests?

Providing accurate data is our top priority and we ensure this through multiple systems of quality control and quality assurance that exceed ISO requirements. All steps taken in the processing of a sample are recorded and able to be audited.

Where is my DNA analysed?

Mygene is a Melbourne born and based company. The DNA is processed locally in our laboratory in Glen Iris.

Getting started

How do I create an account?

Navigate to the Mygene homepage and select ‘register’, then follow the prompts to fill in your details.

Can I use the same login for family members/multiple kits?

Yes, all kits may be accessed through one account if you wish.

How do I activate my test kit?

To activate your test kit, you'll first need to create a Mygene account or login to an existing Mygene account.

Then, to register your test kit, select 'Activate my DNA test kit' and enter the 6 digit barcode number found on the side of the DNA collection tube included in your kit. Example0045-XX

What is in the genetic test kit?

The Mygene test kit includes:

  • Instruction on how to use and activate the kit
  • A myGene cylinder package containing the collection tube and swab
  • Pre-paid return packaging.

Can I use the kit if I am sick or on medication?

Our DNA tests collects DNA from your cheek cells and saliva. The DNA in these cells will remain unchanged regardless of medical conditions in other parts of the body, so the results from these cells will remain the same regardless of your sickness. Similarly, medications that you take will not change your DNA test results. Do take note, however, to avoid ulcers in your mouth when collecting your DNA sample using our cheek swab.

One exception to this is if you are the recipient of a bone marrow transplant or if you have had a recent blood transfusion (7 days before providing your DNA sample). If you are a marrow or blood recipient, your white blood cells will contain the DNA of your donor, these can be found in small amounts in your saliva and accumulate on the swab. The DNA from these cells will not match with your own, and this can result in analysis failure. We therefore do not recommend taking the test if you have received a bone marrow transplant or recent blood transfusion.

In addition, if you are applying a cream or ointment onto the inside of the mouth (gum, teeth, etc), we highly advise you to provide your sample when you are no longer using the cream or ointment.

Can I use the kit if I am pregnant or on my period?

Yes. Our DNA tests collects DNA from your cheek cells and saliva. The DNA in these cells will remain unchanged regardless of changes in other parts of the body, so the test results will remain the same.

When does the test kit expire?

The expiry date is listed on the DNA collection tube. Please collect and return your sample before this date.

The DNA collection tube contains a desiccant which preserves the sample for up to 3 months. However, we recommend returning the sample to our lab at your earliest convenience after you have completed the sample collection.

How do I collect DNA sample?

To collect your DNA effectively, follow the instructions included in the DNA testing kit.

Untwist the cap on the collection tube and, with the swab, swipe the inside of your mouth cheek vigorously up and down 10 times. Rotate every few swipes to thoroughly coat the swab. Carefully return the swab into the case and twist to close.

When is the best time to collect my DNA sample?

Wait at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking. Rinse your mouth with water before collecting DNA sample to ensure there are no contaminants present.

Do not collect DNA sample right after brushing your teeth.

Sample return and status

How do I return my sample?

Your kit will include a pre-paid express postage return mailer which is designed to be deposited in a yellow express post box.

Before returning your sample, please ensure that you have activated your kit via the Mygene website.

After you have collected your sample, seal it back in the Mygene cylinder and place it in the pre-paid return packaging.

We recommend that you return your sample at your earliest possible convenience.

When will my test results be ready?

We process samples and upload results within 72 hours of receiving them at our laboratory.

How quickly must I return my sample after collection?

The sample will be stable for up to 3 months after collection, however, for optimal results we recommend that you return your sample on the same day as collection.

Where should I store my sample before returning?

If you are unable to return your sample on the same day as collection, it should be stored in the fridge or in a cool, dry, dark cupboard or drawer, away from sunlight as UV rays degrade DNA.

How do I track the status of my sample?

Before sending your sample for return to Mygene, please note down your tracking number to track your shipment.

Upon sending in your sample, it takes 2-8 business days for it to arrive at our laboratory.

Once your DNA sample arrives at our lab we will notify you via email. You may track the progress of your sample as it is processed in our lab via your Mygene account on our website.

How are Mygene supplements different from others on the market?

Everything we do at Mygene is driven by extensive research so we only provide products and services that are entirely evidence based and clinically proven.

Having a human genetic testing laboratory requires us to work with strong evidence to link traits to genes and SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms).

Our knowledge of evidenced based medicine has guided us to use the same parameters for putting together these supplements.

The following list is an example of some of the unique factors that set Mygene supplements apart from the rest of the crowd:

  1. Entirely evidence-based: In our research we prefer mainly meta-analyses and Randomised Controlled Trials including double blind randomised controlled trails from reputable published papers rather than observational, case-control, or pilot studies.

  1. Whole ingredients: We use the whole plant ingredient rather than extracts which are used in almost all supplements on the market. Extracts are obtained from whole plant material distilled in ethanol or solvents to yield the ‘essence’ of the plant. This process potentially reduces the benefits that the plant would otherwise offer in its natural, whole form. It also isolates only one active component from the plant when one plant may have
  1. Clinical doses: Our supplements contain the same doses as those used in Randomised Controlled Trials which have been clinically proven to have therapeutic effect beyond placebo.

Virtually all other supplements on the market do not contain the dosage used in Clinical Trials, but instead use very low doses, mainly for marketing purposes rather than efficacy. This means the recommended dosage is too low to have any clinical effect and any results would be largely placebo.

  1. Synergistic ingredients: We also combine efficacious clinical doses of various therapeutic plant sources to create supplements that provide a systemic, multi-faceted approach to a dis-ease.
  1. Additive free: We do not use caking agents, fillers, preservatives, colours, binding agents, flavours or other excipients as used in most other capsules, tablets and supplements. These additives do not provide any therapeutic action. For example, fillers are added solely to provide bulk so that the capsules don’t appear half empty and can also include colloidal silicon dioxide which has been linked to adverse reactions.
  2. Organically sourced: We only use certified organic ingredients in almost all our products unless an organic version is unavailable. This means our products are pure and chemical free.
  3. Complete approach: We looked at symptoms as a whole not in isolation. For example, conventional anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medications often target one neurotransmitter at a time. Our formulations contain a combination of ingredients which target ALL neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine, BDNF, GABA etc. Our supplements also have a secondary effect (e.g. better sleep) and often tertiary effect (e.g. reduced migraines) due to their anti-inflammatory effects
  4. Pet friendly: We work with a Senior Vet who has trialled, approved and dosed the supplements accordingly to provide effective use for animals as well.

Who are these supplements suitable for?

Humans and dogs, cats and horses.

Are ingredients high quality?

We only use Certified Organic in almost all our products unless an organic version is unavailable. This means our products are pure and chemical free.

Are there any side effects to taking Mygene supplements?

Each person processes foods and supplements differently. Given the high clinical doses used, some people may have some mild gastro intestinal upsets. According to the Research we have conducted and our own observational cases, the effects are only transient. However if symptoms persist please stop taking the supplements immediately and contact your health care practitioner.

Is the MyCare range sustainable?

Almost all our products are certified organic. This means no chemical fertilisers or pesticides were used, leading to degradation of the soil and waterways. Our Marine collagen is sourced from sustainable ocean caught Norwegian Cod.

In order to preserve the integrity of our products, we require the total  blockage of visible light. Our pouches are aluminium lined and opaque in order to preserve the product. We use biophotonic Miron Jars from Switzerland for our capsules. These jars are reusable and recyclable.

What is special about Miron Jars?

Will MyCare products interfere with my medical condition or any medications I am taking?

Yes, some of the products will interfere with medication, as some of the individual plant ingredients are used interchangeably in some countries to treat certain conditions. E.g St John’s Wort is used as a substitute for anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medication by Medical Practitioners in Germany.

As MyCalm contains St John’s Wort, this product is not to be taken alongside anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medication.

Why are the Mygene supplement doses higher than other supplements I’ve used?

The doses we recommend for our supplements are equivalent to those used in Clinical Trials which have been proven to have clinical effect. Other supplements use much lower doses which are not proven to provide any therapeutic effect beyond placebo.

Additionally, instead of extracts we use the whole plant in powdered form in our supplements which increases the volume.

Are Mygene products vegan?

myCalm is entirely vegan, sourced from organic whole-plant ingredients. myRepair is not vegan as it contains Marine Collagen sourced from sustainable ocean caught Norwegian Cod.

What allergens are present in Mygene products?

All products are free from dairy, egg, gluten, wheat, nuts and soy.

Can I take Mygene supplements together?

Absolutely, in fact their effects are synergistic when taken together.

What is the best way to take Mygene supplements?

We find it's best to take our supplements in the morning, since this tends to be a good time of day when it comes to remembering to take a newly started supplement.

But we don’t have any reason to believe that time of day will make a difference when taking myGene supplements.

The easiest way to take myGene supplements is by mixing them in a glass with some water or juice.

Can I split the dose across breakfast and dinner?

Yes, it is fine to split the daily dose into morning and night portions. Note however, some products are most effective effective when taken in the morning and may interrupt sleep. Always read the label on your product as use as directed.

Is it ok to drink alcohol while taking Mygene supplements?

None of our supplements contain any ingredients reported to interact negatively with alcohol.

Where are Mygene products manufactured?

All products are manufactured in Australia at a TGA-certified factory.
